Brass Fork Key. These brass keys are located on each side of the stanchion and slide in channels cut into the upper tube. These keys prevent the stanchions from twisting under compression. They are designed to shear off to protect the fork should it encounter a very heavy hit. If shear occurs, the fork will still function to get you home. There are two keys per stanchion.
